The NOVEL SQUAT chapbook is part of the larger Squat Projects (1998–2005) and falls under what Barber calls Littoral Art, an artistic practice focused on social engagement, dialogue, and collaboration within communities. Over eight years, the artist set up livable spaces in art galleries and invited marginalized people to temporarily occupy these Squat installations to produce collaborative texts about squatting, architecture, and communication.
